Signage and Stencils
The Long Creek Watershed Management District has heard from some Participating Landowners that signage would help them educate customers and visitors about the goals of the project, and how those people also play a role.
In some cases, clear, attractive signage is also helpful to convey information to tenants on a property who interact with drainage systems often but may not realize that these structures drain to Long Creek.
On this page, you’ll find some resources that are available to Participating Landowners as well as non-participating properties in Long Creek.
LCWMD professionals do a thorough inspection of Participating Landowner properties each year, and provide feedback to those landowners on what we find. We also hear back from some landowners about how we can help them educate their customers and employees better.
Based on this communication, we have created a few messages that landowners can use to create educational signage for their properties. We have posted these in high-resolution JPGs; if you need a graphic in another format, please contact the District.
No RV Dumping
Dumping of graywater tanks from RVs into drains can introduce pollutants into Long Creek. If you suspect that this occurs on your property, messages like this one may educate visitors and prevent dumping.
No Dumping in Catch Basins
Many people don’t realize that catch basins are connected to Long Creek, and that disposing of trash or waste into these structures can introduce pollutants into Long Creek.
If you suspect that this occurs on your property, messages like this one may educate visitors and prevent dumping, and provides a way for another people to let the LCWMD know if dumping is occurring.
Long Creek Participation
The LCWMD is the first project of its kind in the country, and it’s successful only because of the strong public/private partnership. Signage with the following message is an easy way to let your customers or visitors know that you’re a part of the team.
Property Under Video Surveillance
Signage indicating that a properties are under video surveillance is an effective deterrent to illegal dumping practices. Many forms of this signage are commercially available.
Using stencils to mark the pavement around catch basins and other drainage infrastructure is an easy, effective way to remind people that water from these structures discharges to Long Creek.
LCWMD has developed a custom stencil that Participating Landowners are invited to use on their properties. Please note that the City of South Portland and other municipalities manage stenciling of catch basins that are part of their system: the Long Creek stencils should be used only on private property.
If you would like to borrow the stencil please call, (207) 892-4700 or email us.
